BW Energy story: Mar Atento – Working Together for Ocean Protection
This project was created in Brazil to unite the efforts of fishing communities and the oil and gas industry in preparing for marine emergency response.
Born out of direct dialogue with fishermen, the project values traditional fishing knowledge and offers technical training for shoreline protection and cleaning in the event of an oil spill — strengthening safety, cooperation, and respect for the environment.
Shell and Equinor founded this initiative in 2017, and it has since been implemented in eight municipalities, with partnerships expanding over time. In 2025, BW Energy is proud to join this network, reinforcing its commitment to transparent dialogue, operational safety, and community development.
This year, the focus is on Arraial do Cabo / Rio de Janeiro, a strategic region of high environmental significance.
Through a partnership between Shell, Equinor, PRIO, and BW Energy, local fishermen take part in theoretical and practical training, conducted in a safe and collaborative way, followed by a feedback session that promotes the exchange of experiences and the identification of improvement opportunities.
More than just a project, Mar Atento is an example of how companies and communities can work side by side to protect what is shared by everyone: the ocean.
